چکیده

Hemolytic disease of newborn due to ABO-incompatibility is the most common cause of hemolytic diseases of newborns, its occur due to ABO blood group incompatibility between the mother and infant. The aim of study is to identify the incidence and severity of jaundice in patients with ABO incompatibility. Fifty four babies with ABO incompatibility admitted to AlKhansah maternity and children teaching hospital (in Mosul were studied between the first of January and end of May 2005). Thirty five were males (68.8%), and 19 cases were females (35.2%), their age was 1-10 days, the majority were fullterms 44 cases (81.5%) .and in most of them the weight was> 2.5kg. Family history of jaundice or treatment was negative in (59.2%). Twenty three cases presented during the second and third day of life and jaundice was the hallmark of the disease found in 100% followed by poor feeding, pallor, opisthotonos and hepatosplenomegaly. Serum bilirubin level more than 323 mol/L (> 19 mg/dl) was in (40.8%) hemoglobin level between 100-140 g/L was found in (53.7%) reticulocyte count between (5-9%) was found in (63%) and direct Coomb’s test was positive in (5.5%) of the patients. Thirty two patients (59.2%’) treated with phototherapy and in most of them 18 patients (56.2%) the duration of phototherapy was 24-48 hr, while 22 cases (40.8%) were treated by exchange transfusion and in most of them 16 cases the exchange transfusion was done once. Total serum bilirubin was lowered by 25-50% immediately after the exchange transfusion in 13 cases (59%). The prognosis was good for the most of the patients 46 cases (85.3%) and they were discharged well from the hospital.

ABO Hemolytic Disease Leading to Hyperbilirubinemia in Term Newborns: Value of Immunohematological Tests

Introduction ABO hemolytic disease of the newborn is most common cause of neonatal jaundice; previous studies have shown a poor correlation between serologic tests and clinical course in affected infants. The aim of this study was to identify the value of direct and indirect Coombs’ immunohematological tests, to identify the incidence of hemolytic disease in newborns (ABO-HDN). Methods : This  ...

Background: ABO incompatibility hemolytic disease of the newborn is a common cause of clinical jaundice and causes two-thirds of the hemolytic disease in newborns. Hydrops fetalis due to ABO incompatibility.

Hemolytic disease of the newborn due to ABO incompatibility was first observed by Halbrecht in 1944. This entity has a spectrum ranging from minimal hemolysis requiring no therapy, as is the case in most instances, to severe hemolytic disease requiring aggressive management including exchange transfusion in a small percentage of cases. An extreme degree of hemolytic disease of the newborn due t...

Hemolytic Disease of the Newborn among Newborn Babies with ABO Incompatibility, at the University Teaching Hospital, Lusaka, Zambia

Introduction: Hemolytic disease of the newborn is a clinical condition in which fetal red blood cells are destroyed by maternal allo-antibodies directed red blood cell antigens acquired from the father. Justification: In many developing countries like Zambia, the true incidence of Hemolytic Disease of the New Born is not known. It may be postulated that hyperbilirubineamia due to ABO incompatib...

Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia due to ABO incompatibility: does blood group matter?

Newborn infants with maternal-fetal ABO incompatibility are at a greater risk for developing subsequent significant hyperbilirubinemia, and therefore, prediction of probable risk factors, such as the degree of hemolysis, gains importance. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of fetal-neonatal blood group on the severity of hemolysis and jaundice due to maternal-fetal ABO incompatibili...

ABO Hemolytic Disease Leading to Hyperbilirubinemia in Term Newborns: Value of Immunohematological Tests

Materials and Methods: This two-year retrospective study of 1800 jaundiced term-neonates studied 355 cases due to ABO incompatibility divided into two groups: with and without hemolytic disease. Relation of laboratory parameters and immunohematological tests to severity of disease were studied. We did not analyze the maternal antibody titer or elusion test, and this was a limitation of the stud...
